PICK OF THE WEEK: Bo Diddley - Friday, March 2nd - The Soiled Dove Underground, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because Bo Diddley is a legend and at 78 years old he is still going strong. He is the man who redefined the electric blues when he burst onto the scene in the mid 50's and helped blues music transition into Rock-n-Roll. He has led a storied career and was even banned from the Ed Sullivan show after only one appearance.

You may recognize Diddley's signature hat or rectangular "Cigar Box" style guitar that he has been playing for most of his career but you are sure to recognize some of his more famous tunes. "Hey Bo Diddley" and "Who Do You Love" have stood the test of time and been covered by countless artists over the years.

Diddley is an aging master and the intimate confines of The Soiled Dove Underground is the perfect place to expose yourself to a musical history lesson of sorts as Diddley is sure to rock his way through some classics on Friday night.

FEATURE: Assembly of Dust & Honkytonk Homeslice Team Up for Series of Shows

"I met Reid at High Sierra back in ’95 or ’96 and we hit it off because we were both the singer/ songwriters of our bands. I grabbed him at one point and we went to a quiet spot and hung out with our guitars and traded original songs back and forth," said Billy Nershi in a recent interview with The Marquee.

"Yeah, we spent several hours just trading songs in the campground. It sounds almost like it was scripted but it did really happen," Reid Genauer said a short time later in a separate interview.

These two musicians have covered a lot of ground since they first crossed paths in the mid ’90s. At the time, Genauer was with Strangefolk, and Nershi’s String Cheese Incident was just picking up momentum.

Fast forward to today and things have changed a bit. Genauer left Strangefolk in 2000 to pursue his MBA at Cornell University and since graduation has been focusing on his new project, The Assembly of Dust. On the other hand, Nershi is also about to reinvent himself, having recently made it public that he is leaving SCI in the fall to pursue his side project, Honkytonk Homeslice, full time.

What hasn’t changed over the years is that these two songsmiths are still at the top of their games and are still trading compliments. When asked about Reid’s latest album, Recollection, Nershi responded with an enthusiastic, "It’s great! I’ve got a copy in my car stereo right now and I plan on spinning it for a while." Similarly, Genauer discussed his respect for Nershi and HTHS. "At the F.O.N.K. Festival this past summer, we went on right after Billy and his band. I had just watched their set from the grass and really enjoyed it and I asked him to sit in for a song with us. He did, and we had a blast," said Genauer. "When we finished that song he said he was taking off and we said our goodbyes, but when we were through with our set he was still there and we hung out for a while."

It was that conversation that sparked the idea for this winter’s tour. Their two bands share a mutual admiration and fondness for Americana that lends itself perfectly to the format of the tour. The first two sets will allow each band to showcase their own sound and the third set will be a collaboration between the two groups. "We will probably do a few of our songs and a few of theirs," said Genauer. "But there will be a healthy number of mutually agreeable covers thrown in there too."

Though Nershi and Genauer haven’t been in touch in several years, this tour will not be the first time they have shared the stage for a paying audience. Back in the summer of 1998, SCI was on the road with moe. for the Hoodoo Bash tour and Strangefolk joined up for several dates. While Nershi and Genauer only jammed together a few times that summer it was enough to peak their interest in a second shot at the collaboration.

While they are clearly looking forward to hitting the road together, both bands have been concentrating their efforts internally over the last year. Understanding the need to come together musically in order to produce a quality product, Nershi and Genauer sequestered their respective bands in rural environments to record last summer. The results, while very different, share the common denominator of American roots music.

Over the course of a couple of months in 2006, the five men of Assembly of Dust retreated to Maine to create their newest record Recollection. Holed up in a studio with their buddy Josh Pryor playing the role of engineer and co-producer, the band recorded a very rootsy album that conjures up images of Levon Helm, Rick Danko and the rest of The Band. "I am thrilled with the album," said Genauer. "I am proud of the songcraft, and thrilled with the production value. It really feels like a succinct and purposeful artistic statement to me."

In a similarly laid back situation 1,600 miles away, Nershi, his wife Jillian and multi-instrumentalist and singer Scott Law were bunkered in high up in Nederland, Colo. recording their debut studio effort in the hospitable environment of the Nershi’s home. "We just added a studio onto our house. In fact, the day that people started arriving I was breaking down the tile saw in the upstairs bathroom. We had literally just finished the addition and everybody showed up. We had one day to hang out and get reacquainted before we started recording," Nershi remembered.

It will be a similar situation when HTHS hits the road with Genauer and his Assembly of Dust this month. They will jump right into things on the first night and hammer out the set of collaborations over the course of the seven-night tour. Nershi is confident that by the time they reach Colorado for the final three dates everything will be running smoothly. "Touring together gives us a chance to work out tunes together and create a sound that neither band could achieve individually," he said. "We’ll do a little homework in advance but most of the music is learned in sound checks or during after-show jam sessions." "It shouldn’t be much of a challenge," agreed Genauer. "We are philosophically coming from the same place as musicians."

PICK OF THE WEEK: Assembly of Dust & Honkytonk Homeslice - Thursday, Friday & Saturday, February 22nd, 23rd, & 24th - Various Front Range Venues, CO

Why You Should Go: This is a great opportunity to catch two songwriters that are revered in the Jamband scene (Billy Nershi and Reid Genauer) on the same night in the same venue. They will even share the stage with their bands for a short set of originals and covers at the end of the evening.

Billy Nershi is a founding member of the electro/bluegrass/funk powerhouse String Cheese Incident. To the dismay of many loyal SCI fans he has recently announced his departure from the band after summer 2007 to pursue his new project Honkytonk Homeslice full time. In addition to Nershi, HTHS features his wife Jillian and ex-Hanuman multi-instrumentalist Scott Law. Their sound is rooted in the bluegrass and americana traditions that are close to Nershi's heart. Stellar flat picking and tight harmonies dominate the originals the group will offer off of their recent self titled record. I even understand that there are some new tunes that will show their faces on this run of shows. HH performs around 2 large diaphragm microphones. This setup gives them a delicate old-timey-with-a-sexy-modern-twist sound, which works best if the audience is quiet (the microphones pick up crowd chatter & project it along with the music).

Reid Genauer became known to many in the music world as one of the founders of East Coast jam songsmiths Strangefolk during the 90's. Genauer left Strangefolk in 2000 to pursue his MBA from Cornell University and upon graduating promptly returned to making music. His current project, The Assembly of Dust, showcases his talents as a songwriter and frontman. AOD's sound is reminiscent of The Band or Workingman's Dead era Greatful Dead. They have been touring the country for the past 4 years and their upcoming release Recollection is already getting airtime on major radio stations.

These 3 front range shows fall at the end of a 8 night tour of the Western US and should feature fully warmed up bands. Honkytonk Homeslice will start off each evening with a 75 minute set followed by Assembly of Dust with a 75 minute set of their own. The collaborative set will be at least 5 songs, although they've been stretching that out the last couple nights so who knows what'll happen in Colorado. They have had a chance to play several dates together already and I'm sure they have gotten to know each other's styles, so the closing set of the evening should be something to witness.

Don't miss the opportunity to catch HTMS and AOD - Alone and Together.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Shins - Thursday, February 15th - Fillmore Auditorium, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Because this band will change your life . . . or wait . . . come to think of it that might be overstating it just a little bit. The truth is that until their recent release Wincing the Night Away I wasn't much of a fan at all. The new record has converted me, their sound is far less monotonous and has actually become pretty interesting. In short they have produced a collection of songs that live up to their overnight super stardom (courtesy of Zach Braff, Natalie Portman in Garden State) and prove to music fans everywhere that they are up for the challenge of being a big dog in today's pop music world.

They were playing some of these new songs a few months back when I caught part of their set on the big stage of the ACL Festival down in Austin. I was immediately drawn to the music and found myself telling my friends that I enjoyed The Shins set, something I hadn't exactly expected to hear come out of my mouth.

Be sure to get to the venue early because Viva Voce will be tearing things up early in the evening and they are definately worth catching. Their recent album Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, has made many return trips to my cd player over the past several months.

Yes there are 3 bands on the bill, and the show isn't scheduled to start until 8 but mark my words, The Fillmore is notorious for starting bands well before the start time listed on your ticket. If you are interested in seeing The Giranimals you better get there before 8 while I expect that Viva Voce will take the stage shortly after 8.

REVIEW: Joe Ely's 60th Birthday Party (featuring Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses) - February 9th - Bender's Tavern, Denver, CO

The Scene: This was an invite only party celebrating Ely's 60th that followed his appearance at The Paramount with Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Guy Clark on the Four Horsemen Tour. At the beginning of the night there were two distinct camps in Bender's. Those who knew Ely and those who didn't.

All told, there were probably 150 or so people in attendance including Nick Forester (of Hot Rize and E-Town fame), his wife Helen and Mayor John Hickenlooper (who accidentally ducked into the women's bathroom to the left of the stage). I ran into Guy Clark in the bathroom but he never made it back into the party and John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett never showed their faces either. In fact, Ely was only in the room for the first 20 minutes or so of the party and the first 2 or 3 songs of Ryan Bingham's set. I figured he must have left to prep for the inevitable late night jam with touring buddies but alas there was no collaboration and Ely himself only came out for 2 songs at the very end of the party. One solo (with a little help from Bingham on vocals) and then he stepped up to the mic to sing parts of Townes Van Zandt's "White Freightliner Blues" with Bingham and his band. It was great to see Ely in such a small venue but it would have been nice to see a couple more songs by his tourmates. An apprearance by Lovett or Hiatt would have really made for a memorable evening and it was a shame it didn't happen.

Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses: Bingham and his band deliver some honest to goodness boot stomping, shit-kicking Texas country and it was easy to see why Ely invited them to play his party. They started out a little rough but as the sound problem got worked out they kicked it into high gear and had even some of the hipster folks in attendance cutting the rug in front of the stage. While this sound isn't really my cup of tea most of the time, I can appreciate a good band when I see them and these guys were hitting on all cylinders.

They have clearly been learning from Ely and the rest of the best in the Texas Honky-Tonk Rock-N-Roll scene. They lean a little more to the country side than Ely but definately rocked Bender's on Friday night.

PICK OF THE WEEK: The Four Horsemen (Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Guy Clark) - Friday, February 9th - Paramount Theatre, Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: This is an amazing opportunity to see four living legend songwriters share the same stage as if they were inviting you into their living room. The format of this show is a songwriters circle where each performer will take his turn playing one song for the group before passing the baton on to the person sitting next to him. They may play some of their best known and loved tunes or they might break out a couple of brand new ones. You never know and it changes each night depending on their mood.

Even if you just go to see one of these fellas, you have my word that you will be wowed by everyone on the stage and I'd be surprised if you didn't pick up a new album or two due to the experience. The old world beauty of the Paramount will suit this evening perfectly as performers and audience alike will soak up the ambiance as it does it's part to make the music sound that much better.

As I mention below the show is currently sold-out but it wouldn't hurt to give Ticketmaster a shot or two (link below) as the show gets closer as they often release tickets as the show approaches. Also try your hand outside the venue on the night of the show, you never who might back out and give you the opportunity to enjoy this amazing musical occasion.
