PICK OF THE WEEK: Dinosaur Jr. - Friday December, 14th - The Ogden Theater, Denver, CO

Why You Should go: Because there is only one Dinosaur Jr. The psuedo line-up from the 90's just didn't compete with the sheer sonic assault of the original line-up of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph. They've been back together for a couple of years now and with a new album under their belt they are firing on all cylinders and raging through songs new and old with the same late 80's fervor that caused them to rise to the top of the college rock / burgeoning grunge scene.

This is not a show for the light hearted, with his massive Marshall stacks, Mascis always seems to be bent on deafening his audience. If you go prepared with fresh set of earplugs you should be well prepared for a concert of epic proportions. Don't expect too much of the radio friendly 90's Dinosaur Jr. output, these guys are focusing on what they did so well 20 years ago and it's like they never left.

The clip is their take on the Cure from their DVD, Live At The Middle East.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Iron & Wine - Saturday, December 8th - The Paramount Theater Denver, CO

Why You Should Go: Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine) and his group of travelling minstrels are reinventing folk music for the 21st Century. In the tradition of Dylan and Guthrie, he is a master songwriter and guitarist and as he matures as an artist his ability to compose intricate pieces of music becomes more and more clear.

His most recent release, The Shepherd's Dog, retains all of Beam's hallmarks while stretching the boundries of his sound. The tempo is ratched up on some songs while on others he utilizes his full band to add just the right details to the quietest moments of the most mellow songs. It is simply a fantastic record and is sure to make many writers best of lists this year.

Beam will bring his full band to The Paramount on Saturday and tickets are going fast. I wouldn't wait to get to the door to buy yours as they very well may be gone.
